Some of the Best Places to Explore When You Travel to Africa
People that have never travelled to Africa generally do not realise that it is home to no fewer than 54 countries. Because of this, the scenery, cultures, landscapes, and activities on the continent vary dramatically from one region to the next. Every time you return to Africa, you can expect to see and experience something new. That is what is so wonderful about it. Are you planning to travel Africa but you do not know where to start, where to go, and what to do? By highlighting some of the most popular countries and places to go, we hope to make the planning process a little easier for you. Keep in mind that we strongly recommend hiring a 4×4 and exploring these countries as a self-drive tour.
- Kenya and Tanzania. Tanzania is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, which is one of the most sought-after hiking spots in the world. Many people combine Kenya and Tanzania into one trip as they are conveniently close and of course, because here is where you can watch the Great Migration for yourself. During this migration, thousands of zebra, gazelle, and wildebeest make their way from the Masa Mara area in Kenya to the Serengeti in Tanzania, and back again. Even if you go to these countries at any other time of the year, you can expect to see spans of wildlife. To watch the Great Migration, visit these countries from July to September. It is quite rainy in the region between April and May, but still a beautiful time of year to visit.
- Zambia and Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls is a major draw card for these two countries. Park the 4×4, hop out, and enjoy some white-water rafting. The Zambezi River is certainly the place for it, even with its resident hippos and crocodiles! In Zambia, walking safaris in the South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi National Parks are an absolute must. Game drives and walks are popular, along with fishing and canoeing. Both of these countries experience peak season during winter when it is mild and dry. The best time to visit them is probably from June to September. From October to January, the weather is extremely hot.
- Soaring over the world’s highest sand dunes in a hot-air balloon is certainly something to enjoy when visiting Namibia, but you also have the opportunity to climb them! Here the scenery is exceptional although there is not much in terms of game viewing. The landscape is breathtaking though, and best enjoyed by 4×4. Popular tours include that of the desert, Skeleton Coast, and the ghost town of Kolmanskop.
